Going for the Triathalon

I was excited to sign up for the Hobble Creek Half Marathon scheduled for the end of the summer, registration opened up May 1st. My friend Xenya called me, because she had signed up and knew I wanted to run it as well, to let me know the race was filling up. I got online right then to sign up for it and it was already full. I was so bummed. I won't be able to run the Provo River 1/2 marathon because it is the same day that Reece will be baptized. So, I'm going with plan B. I've always wanted to do a triathlon, but haven't for one excuse or another, but I think this is my year to do one.

It is:
a .75K swim
20K bike (12.4 mile)
5K run (3.1 miles)

I better decide for sure pretty quick, I've heard that this triathlon fills up quickly as well. What do you guys think? Has anyone ever done one?

Go, Marisa Go! I trained for one... and never did it, but it was fun training for it! Swimming is the hardest part for me. (it was hard to train for it and I'm not very fast!) I know it won't be a big problem for you because you have a.... longer body. Running you're the bomb at so you will kick butt there. Cycling, is good too. It's a long ways and hills kill but it is good to get rid of the "thunder thighs". OVerall, Best if you train with an Amigo.

I've never done one-- please, one thing at a time for me... i can barely run 3 miles. anyway- i have friends who have and they say it's the BEST ever. better than marathons. they love them. i think you should do it.

Do it, do it, do it! It would be so fun to do something different, and maybe Nora would swim for you! :)

As for Gone With the Wind-I didn't finish. I took it back to the library a few days ago. I was about 2/3 of the way done. I had a total love/hate relationship with this book. I'm going to read some much smaller Newberry Medal books over the summer to recover. Maybe I'll finish it in the fall.

I thought a triathlon was longer than that. Like, at the end you run a marathon? I know there are half triathlons and sprint triathlons that I've looked into. Maybe I'm mistaken?.

Good luck. That will be awesome! Where is there one around here, anyway?

Yes, this one is technically a sprint triathlon. The iron man triathlon is a 2.4 mile swim (I think I would drown)112 mile bike and a full marathon at the end, 26.2 mile run).

There are also half triathlons, which would be half of that.

Then there is olympic triathlons, which is just double the sprint length.

If I decide that I like it, I might try the olympic distance. But, we shall see, right?

i made the mistake of watching an old women's triathlon on youtube one time, and one of the ladies (who was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too thin as it is) literally collapsed like 10 yards before the finish line and had to drag herself across to finish. i never want to be that.

of course, for a while i thought that was going to be me finishing my half-marathon, but my friend quickly assured me that those people are way more nuts than i'll ever be.

I was training for a triathalon when I lived in Phoenix but we moved so I never got to participate. The cycling was the hard part for me, swimming is more of my thing. You should totally do it so can live vicariously through YOU...I am so out of shape now I can't imagine training for one anymore.

Definitely do it! Definitely.

Oh do it! Would you just use the bike you have now? or would you get a road bike?

I was reading some tips on completing your first triathlon, it said to just use whatever bike you already have, even if it isn't a road bike. If I really like it and want to get into it more, then I will get a road bike and a wetsuit, but for now, I'm going to get a speedo (I'm not going to swim it in my tankini) and use my mountain bike.
