Okay everyone. Reece is in 4th grade now, and I as part of his home school curriculum I have added memorization. I'm pretty much running out of ideas, what did you memorize in 4th/5th grade? This year he has memorized:
30 days hath September, April, June and November
All the rest have 31,
Save February, 28 days clear,
and 29 each leap year.
And...

Am
Is
Are
Was
Were
Be
Being
Been
Do
Does
Did

Now, he is memorizing this (the states song)
I was thinking about the Gettysburg Address?

How about the Jabberwocky? That's the only thing I remember memorizing in grade school.
We memorized songs that had the names of all the states. I could sing it to you if you want... I think that was fourth grade. And I memorized the presidents (that was probably middle school though). I memorized a lot of poems by that funny guy Jack Prelutzky (?). Good luck! I am officially off the homeschooling bandwagon for now, give me liberty or give me death, that's what I say ; )
State song best ever, cam and i sing it occasionally.
We memorized the counties in Utah,
memorized parts of MLK "I have a dream"
parts of the constitution,
poems.... this was fun cause we also go to illustrate them.

you should have him memorize the genus and common names of all your plants in your garden.
I love when children memorize poetry. I think it stays with them forever. Especially if it has a message they can relate to.
Our favorite has been "Stick TO Your Task". Hayden still repeats it. Here's a link to when he memorized it:

The Declaration of Independence! Maybe a little too advanced for 4th grade, but I memorized it in elementary school.

Marisa, there is a really great book called Singing Smart. I can get you their contact info if you want it. It comes with a cd and it has:
planets
bones
muscles
states
states and capitals
branches of government
countries in Europe
countries in Africa
continents and seas
tallest mountains in the world
famous explorers
famous inventors, etc.
I use these songs in conjunction with whatever we happen to be studying all the time.
I also have another book (can't remember what it's called right now) and it has songs about most of the famous composers.
My kids are also required to memorize poems. We always have one and as soon as it is passed off they choose a new one. Periodically we have review months to keep old poems fresh in our minds. I am thinking about having them start memorizing Shakespeare pretty soon. I know there are Shakespearian quote books that you can get which range from the very simple to the sonnet.

I remember memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution in 5th grade (with Mrs. Rouse!) -- not that I remember it now, but whatever.
